It might sound odd to hear that blue jeans are currently big fashion news. After all, aren’t they always in style? Well, yes, but over the last few years the most fashion-forward jeans have been anything but blue – we’ve seen printed jeans, coloured jeans, leather jeans, flared jeans, super-skinny jeans and even (gasp) jeggings. Jeans have been jazzed up, decorated and played with beyond recognition and rarely for the better.
But right now, we’re more than pleased that good old-fashioned blue denim is back on the style radar. Cue a collective sigh of relief – after all, blue jeans suit just about everybody – hence their staying power since first worn in late 18th century America. True blue denim was spotted on the spring/summer 2013 catwalks at Burberry Brit, Acne and Gucci, as well as by denim brands Made In Heaven, Current/Elliot and J Brand. The key to wearing blue jeans with a new spin is to look for the following three trends: ‘boyfriend’ shapes that hang loose on the leg and hips; high-rise waist lines that sit above the belly button; or distressed denim that’s ripped, faded and pre-worn in look.
The joy is that true blue denims are a trend you can invest in – we’ll probably still be wearing them in two centuries time.
