Your ultimate guide to the coats to invest in for AW17? From statement prints to rich fabrics, we’ve got you covered...
If there’s one game-changing item you need to invest in, that will instantly update your wardrobe for the new season, it’s definitely the humble coat. But don’t make the mistake of thinking coats are boring, oh no. For AW17, outerwear has never been cooler, or bolder. Here are the hottest trends to try now.
While SS17 was all about gingham, for AW17, checks are king. Whether it was Mulberry, Hermes or Stella McCartney, designers at Paris and London Fashion Week drew on British heritage for their autumnal offerings, but with a modern twist. The beauty of a checked coat or jacket is that it’s much more versatile than you’d think. If you’re feeling daring, try the head-to-toe look, by wearing a checked trench over a checked suit, preferable in clashing colours.
For a subtler approach, wear over a knitted midi dress and suede over the knee boots in the office, and with a chunky knit, jeans and trainers at the weekend.
Rich Fabrics and Jewel Tones
If prints aren’t your thing, perhaps rich jewel tones will be more up your street. There’s no denying red is the colour of the new season, and a duster coat in the bright hue is the easiest and quickest way to make your wardrobe bang-on-trend. With this, more is more, so wear it over a red silk shirt and matching tapered trousers, paired with deep red ankle boots (if you dare), à la Max Mara or Prada.
Jewel tones of mustard, blue, purple and deep green also featured heavily on the AW17 catwalk at Dior and Erdem, and are a great way to stand out in a sea of black and beige coats (not that there’s anything wrong with the classics). The key to nailing this trend is picking fabrics that are as luxurious as precious stones. Think cashmeres, soft suedes and crushed velvets, to be layered over equally soft fabrics like satin or corduroy trousers. A black crushed velvet wrap jacket will easily see you through party season.
A Selection of Outerwear..
A Selection of Outerwear..
Love it or hate it, 80s fashion has made a major comeback for AW17, as seen on the catwalk at Jil Sander, Galliano and Victoria Beckham. Where nipped in waists were popular for the past few seasons, this time round it’s all about power dressing and masculine tailoring. Don’t be afraid to go up a size or two when buying your outerwear, and if you do want a bit of definition, feel free to add a chunky leather belt around the waist.
Pick exaggerated shape with oversized sleeves and broad shoulders. This style is best paired with louche or wide leg trousers, but also works well with skinny jeans, which will balance out proportions.
The New Black
Now we know colour isn’t for everyone, and you can’t deny a black coat will see you through season after season. So if you’re determined to stick to the monochrome palette, then you’re going to love AW17’s take on black. Because yes, black is getting a bit of an edgy update this season, whether it’s the kinky leather belted numbers we saw at Bottega Veneta, or the military styles seen at Alexander McQueen, Balmain and Louis Vuitton.
Pick an embellished biker leather jacket, or a midi length duster coat for a chicer approach.
