The building was built by Donato Bramante between 1502 and 1509 , although it was ordered by the Spanish royals in fulfilment of the vow made for the birth of their first son, Giovanni, who died prematurely in 1497. It was also supposed to celebrate the martyrdom of St. Pietro which, according to tradition, took place right on the Janiculum.
