Salvatore Ferragamo opende in 1923 de Hollywood Boot Shop, waar hij supersterren als Marilyn Monroe en Gloria Swanson tot zijn klanten mocht rekenen. Maar het was in 1927 dat Ferragamo terugkeerde naar Italië om zijn imperium op te bouwen.
Het merk bereikte wereldwijd succes, met als hoogtepunt de beroemde rode hakken die July Garland droeg in The Wizard of Oz, die door Ferragamo zelf waren gemaakt.
Tegenwoordig zijn schoenen nog steeds de belangrijkste trekpleister in het assortiment van Salvatore Ferragamo, dat ook luxe lederwaren en accessoires omvat.
