Celebrate Mother's Day with Denby's favourite Orange and Poppy Seed Loaf Cake. 


  • 250g plain flour
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 250g unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 200g golden caster sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 oranges, juice of
  • 4 oranges, zest of
  • 50g poppy seeds



  • Heat the oven to 180°C / 350°F / Gas Mark 4.
  • Grease your loaf tin and line with baking paper.
  • Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, either by hand or using an electric mixer.
  • Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well.
  • Pour in the flour and baking powder, followed by the orange juice, zest and poppy seeds. Ensure everything is thoroughly combined.
  • Bake for 50 - 60 mins until the top is golden and the cake is springy to the touch.
  • Let the cake cool completely before decorating it on a Denby platter. We used orange buttercream, candied orange slices and edible flowers.
