The roll neck

This classic winter staple featured on many an AW20 womenswear runway with Isabel Marant, Veronica Beard and Gabriela Hearst among the designers to celebrate this versatile basic in their collections. Opt for muted colours layered under bright suits for a soulful 70s aesthetic, or pair with pencil skirts and midi dresses for a quintessential preppy look that’s perfect for the office.

A classic black roll neck from the likes of Gap or All Saints is a seasonal essential you’ll reach for time and again, while soft cashmere styles from Jaeger and Jigsaw are an investment buy you’ll thank yourself for.

Prints & patterns
Kenneth Ize, Lacoste and Arthur Arbesser all debuted patterned knitwear in their AW20 collections, with 70s-style prints on show at all three designers. It’s a look that transcends both dark and bright shades, with everything from zesty lime to autumnal tones of bark and burnt orange making an appearance.

Heavy knits, such as those you’d find at Tommy Hilfiger or Paul Smith are what you want to aim for, with retro patterns like argyle among those to covet. Pair with a wide-legged jean – Gap have a great range this season – and a high-waisted belt to add a touch of definition an emphasised 70s’ aesthetic.

Chunky knitwear
Women’s knitwear is supersizing for AW20 with chunky cable knits and dramatic oversized separates taking centre stage. It’s a trend that featured on multiple AW20 runways, with everyone from Ryan Roche to Dolce & Gabbana showcasing knitted co-ords and ultra-long scarves.

That’s not to say any oversized knit will do. Colour is also key to this look with beiges, camels and biscuit tones the ones to aim for. Leave brights on the rack and stock-up on woollen cardigans, scarves, jumpers and skirts from the likes of All Saints, Gap and Reiss in tea and milky coffee shades
